FRANKLIN STUDIO, founded in 1973,
is located in the heart of Canada's finest
apple growing region. Carved from one acre of orchard,
and surrounded by apple
and cherry trees, it is a natural refuge
for both birds...and bird lovers!
A visit to the Studio,
in the charming countryside of Franklin Centre, Quebec,
will be a pleasant surprise.
The overwhelming selection of quality, handcrafted
Bird houses and Bird feeders,
will amuse and delight you. There are Fire Station
Bird Houses, and Curling Club feeders. We have
Sugar Shanty houses and Windmill feeders.
There are feeders that look like Flamingos, and Crows,
and some that look like comical Holstein Cows.
Cathedral feeders, as shown below, hold three varieties
of seed in large quantities.
These feeders provide access from all four sides.
The small windows may be a variety of shapes,
(an apple is shown).
Our professional lettering
skills, allow for any name, sign, or logo
to be added to most of our
houses or feeders, at a slight extra charge.
Many of our houses open up for spring cleaning.
Just pull out the perch to unlock the hidden doors.
We also build Bat Houses that hold up to 50
Insect eating Bats, as well as houses for beautiful
Butterflies to shelter in while visiting your garden.
All of our houses and feeders are lovingly handcrafted
from locally grown Canadian Pine, and Cedar.
Hours of careful detail go into each and every one,
and no two are exactly alike, as each is
individually crafted, right here in the Studio.
We commonly hear our visitors say...
"They're too nice to put outside!"
Go ahead, be brave, they're all made to withstand
even the most fierce Canadian winter!
Brent Harrison, Artist and owner of Franklin Studio, has a
creative talent that people delight in seeing.
In front of the Studio stands a twelve foot high giant Bird house
made from a huge hollow Basswood tree. Featuring a delightful flower
box with bright wood tulips, a cedar shake roof, a stone chimney, and
even a copper weather vane. It's fun for children and adults alike!
Inside the shop more than one hundred lovingly handcrafted houses
and feeders are available for purchase.
From the copper roofed Church, to the Cedar Outhouse,
no time or effort is spared in making these tiny works of art.
The renovated barn that is the Studio, workshop, and store,
has been tastefully decorated with an interesting assortment of antiques
and original art. There is even an 1860 foot operated platten
printing press in the shop to amuse the mechanically inclined,
along with lots of handpainted milk cans,
original oil paintings, and other antiques.
No self respecting
Bird Shop would be complete without a wide assortment of seed,
and so of course we've got it! We stock seed year round for our
little winged friends, and encourage you to feed year round as well.
"BIRD SEED"
We are pleased to offer a good variety of seed
all year round. Special variety blends are available, along with traditional
grey striped sunflower seed and black oil sunflower seed, as well as
Mixed wild seed with corn, and corn cobs, or nyger seed.
We will carry all purchases to your car, and yes,
we are wheel chair accessible.
Your purchases are all tax free, and we offer a further
10% discount to Seniors ("But you have to ask for it because I've got
in trouble before, by suggesting someone take advantage of our seniors
discount when they weren't a senior yet!")
Come for your Bird supplies or just to chat about Birds,
you're always welcome!
In the winter we'll fire up the big wood stove,
and put on a pot of Bird friendly shade grown coffee.
"HELPFUL HINTS"
Here are some little tips on how you can better enjoy Birds
in your backyard! Try planting a few of those sunflower seeds
the birds have been enjoying all winter.
You'll not only be rewarded with lovely giant flowers in the summer,
but your little friends will be attracted to them, and eat on the fly.
Plus you'll get free seed for next season.
Water is a vital need of Birds, keeping a supply of fresh water
near your feeder will fill this need and attract more birds.
Birds will hesitate to visit a feeder placed right out in the open.
Put it a few feet away from evergreen trees or shrubs,
to provide protective cover. Your used Christmas tree is great for this...
Don't throw it away, just put it near your feeder until spring.
Steel poles are better than wood for supporting houses and feeders,
they are harder for predators to climb.
You'll be surprised at the birds you can attract with just a little
peanut butter dabbed on the roof of your feeder.
Of course planting berries is a good draw for birds, raspberries,
strawberries, blackberries etc.. Red or Yellow flowers will attract
hummingbirds, Zinnias will attract Goldfinches to nibble their seed.
All of our Bird houses come with decorative Raffia bows attached,
not only are they very pretty, but the birds use the bows as required
nesting material. To encourage occupants to reside in your
bird houses, try attaching one of those little square fruit baskets
to the tree, and fill it with scraps of string and wool, even bits of
hair from your pet dog or cat.
Birds will use this to make their nest.
You can make your own suet, just by visiting
your local butcher shop. If you tell them it's for the birds, they'll
often give you fat at no charge.Boil it down twice, in a double boiler.
Then just mix in a blend of your favorite seeds,
and perhaps a little peanut butter and rolled oats. Allow to cool set.
Bluebirds, (believe it or not), will eat some kinds of Dog food!
"CRASH LANDING"
Why do birds hit windows, and what should I do when I find
an injured bird? Birds strike windows usually because the reflected
sky appeared in the glass, causing the bird to think
all was clear flying ahead! To prevent this, place a black bird cut
out silhouette (paper) in the window. The bird will see this predator
shape in the sky and change course...it really works!
For a bird fallen from the nest or
stunned from hitting a window, try this tip.
Cut the ends out of a cardboard box,
making it tunnel shaped,
and gently cover the bird with it. After an hour or so the bird
should have recovered and left this shelter.

Of course if any physical damage is
evident as a result of this crash,
you'll need veterinary assistance.
For babies fallen from their nest
you can do the same thing mentioned earlier, or
line a fruit basket with paper towels
and put the chick inside.Place the basket in the tree,
as close to the nest as possible. You may need to tie the basket in
place with string so he doesn't tumble again.
Then just wait, far away,
and Mom will come get him!
